An apparition of the saint once saved the burning palace of the Doge of Venice by throwing a piece of blessed bread on the flames.
He spent the last thirty years of his life in Tolentino preaching with wonderful success, where the Guelfs and the Ghibellines were in constant strife.
"Say nothing of this," he would insist, "give thanks to God, not to me. This friar told Nicholas that he was in Purgatory, and urged him to celebrate the Eucharist for him and other souls there, so that they would be set free by the power of Christ. The friar again spoke to Nicholas, thanking him and assuring him that a large number of souls were now with God.
Because of this Nicholas was proclaimed patron of the souls in Purgatory.
He is also considered the patron saint against epidemic disease and against fires.
During most of his adult life, Nicholas lived in Tolentine, Italy. As soon as he was old enough he was received into the Order of Augustinian friars and made his novitiate in 1261.
His preaching brought many to Christ.
Nicholas Gurutti was born in 1245 in Sant'Angelo, Pontano, Macerata, Italy. He gave special attention to those who had fallen away from the Church. As a child, he entered the Augustinian convent in his town, first as a student, then as a novice. Sylvester, Pope CNA is a service of EWTN News, Inc.
People considered him a miracle worker. Many of the cures obtained through Saint Nicholas’ prayers were received while he himself was infirm.
In 1345 a lay Brother cut off the arms of his body intending to take them to Germany as relics, and the friars then hid his body to prevent further attempts of this kind.
Received visions, including images of Purgatory, which friends ascribed to his lengthy fasts. Nicholas died September 10, 1306 and was canonized by Pope Eugene IV in 1446.
