But Francis was devoted to the Sorrowful Heart of Mary. Gabriel of Our Lady of Sorrows, also known as Francisco Possenti, was an Italian seminarian who was born on March 1, 1838 to Agnes and Sante Possenti in Assisi. His father, who misunderstood the meaning of worth of a religious vocation did much to try to dissuade his son.
He invites us to share in the Passion of Christ and to spread his love to the world.
St. The heart of his spirituality was to study and imitate the virtues of our Suffering Savior as mirrored in the heart of the Sorrowful Virgin Mary.
He led an exemplary life as a religious, filled with penances and self-effacement, was stricken with tuberculosis before he could be ordained, and died at Isola di Gran Sasso in the Abruzzi on February 27, 1862: he was not yet twenty-four.
The bandits eventually left without causing any harm, and Gabriel was hailed as a hero.
St. Despite being outnumbered, he was able to defeat the bandits and chase them away from his town.
The people of the town were grateful to Gabriel for his bravery and his willingness to protect them. He teaches us how to love Mary and to unite ourselves to her sorrows.
Yet, he had attained such remarkable sanctity in that short time he was a Passionist that he was canonized a Saint by the Church in 1920. He sensed that God was calling him to something more. They began to attack Gabriel with their swords and knives, trying to kill him.
But Gabriel was brave and determined, and he fought back with all of his might.
[Editor's Note: Gabriel was canonized in May of 1920.]
The Mass and Office in honour of Blessed Gabriel are allowed to the whole Passionist congregation, and his feast day is celebrated on 31 May. It is the express wish of Leo XIII and Pius X that he should be regarded as the chief patron of the youth of today, and especially as the patron of young religious, both novices and professed, in all that concerns their interior lives.

Gabriel Possenti was born on March 1, 1838, in Assisi, Italy, the eleventh of thirteen children born to Sante Possenti and Agnes Frisciotti. He was humble, obedient, cheerful and charitable to everyone he met. Only five years later, weekly devotions in his honor were begun in St. Michael Church, Union City, N. J.
For over 55 years, thousands of favors-----some of a most extraordinary nature-----have been granted and are attributed to his powerful intercession with Christ Crucified and the Sorrowful Mother Mary. His family was well-off and respected, as his father was a lawyer and a government official. a cloud covered them, blotting out the sun, and a voice from the cloud said, "This is my beloved Son.
Listen to him."Mark 9:2-3, 7

The Catholic Church celebrates the feast day of St. Gabriel Possenti on February 27.
