He attended Oklahoma State University for a short time.
He left OSU and enrolled at Oklahoma Baptist University. Playing the trumpet came naturally to him and, as a teenager, played with some very notable musicians of his day and even became the band leader of several jazz, dance and Dixieland bands. His faith never wavered. And his absence will leave a huge void in our lives. During that period, the church also baptized 15,000 people, gave $250 million to missions, relocated from downtown to its current location in west Houston and helped launch the Bible teaching ministry of Beth Moore.
Some 500 Houston’s First members entered full-time Christian vocations, including 100 international missionaries under Bisagno, according to BP.
President of the Southern Baptist Convention Pastors’ Conference in 1972, Bisagno was a frequent preacher at state Baptist evangelism conferences and the Pastors’ Conference.
NASHVILLE (BP) — John Bisagno, an evangelistic innovator and longtime pastor of Houston’s First Baptist Church, died Aug. 5 in Nashville following a battle with cancer. In November of 2017, he moved to Franklin, Tennessee to live with his oldest son, Tim and his family. His passion and legacy of love for Jesus and others continues on through his children and their ministries, his grandchildren and their ministries, through his great grandchildren, through Houston’s First Baptist Church and through the many many lives he has reached by simply saying “yes” to Jesus.

I’ve lost everything and it IS true: Jesus is still enough!”Early Sunday morning, August 5, 2018, after a week at Vanderbilt University Hospital in Nashville, Tennessee, Brother John left us to be united with His Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ and to be RE-united with his “Pretty” (Uldine.) Brother John was a big man with an even bigger heart full of the love of Jesus.
In 1977 he moved Houston’s First Baptist Church from downtown to its current location at the corner of 610 and I-10. It was love at first sight for both of them. He loved Jesus and he loved making Him known to anyone who would listen. Following an early career as a Dixieland jazz trumpeter, Bisagno gave his life to Christ in 1952 and accepted a call to ministry.
He was the driving force behind 3 Christian schools in Houston: re-establishing Northwest Academy and founding Houston Christian High School and First Baptist Academy. He told his friends, the Copelins, who came to visit him in Tennessee, “I’ve preached it as long as I’ve been preaching, that ‘Jesus is enough.’ Now I’ve experienced it for myself.
