Pedro Calungsod was a young Filipino catechist and martyr who lived in the 17th century. St. Pedro and St. Peter Chanel were both associated with the Pacific Islands. Pedro Calungsod’s life and death have become a powerful symbol of faith, missionary work, and courage in the face of adversity. Calungsod dodged lances thrown at him but refused to abandon his priest.
His youthful dedication and humble heart made him a beloved figure among the local community.
Tragically, on April 2, 1672, St. Pedro Calungsod was martyred along with a Jesuit priest, Fr. Diego Luis de San Vitores, by a group of Chamorro rebels who had become hostile to the missionaries’ presence.
Calungsod was formally beatified on March 5, 2000 by Pope John Paul II.
Calungsod was officially canonized by Pope Benedict XVI at Saint Peter's Basilica in Vatican City on October 21, 2012. But the child's father, called Matapang, angrily refused baptism for his daughter. He stands as a symbol of faith and courage in the face of persecution. Amen.

In 1672, Calungsod and San Vitores were killed by a group of hostile Chamorros who were opposed to their missionary work. Pedro’s feast day is celebrated on April 2, the anniversary of his martyrdom.
