Mrs. Hobbs intended that the girls live in cottages and save expenses by supplying much of their food and doing all the cooking, cleaning, and so forth.

It was called New Garden Hall, but in later years was renamed Mary Hobbs Hall. 

Mary Hobbs's interest in education was not limited to Quaker girls. In recognition of her work for higher education, The University of North Carolina awarded her the honorary doctor of literature degree in 1921.

While continuing to write and speak for women's education, she also used her expressive voice and pen in many other causes—among them temperance, woman suffrage, home missions, capital punishment, Indian affairs, orphanages, and the League of Nations.

She was tutored by her father, an 

outstanding teacher, attended village schools and New Garden Boarding School, and was graduated from Miss Howland's School on Lake Cayuga, Union Springs, N.Y. After graduation she taught at Howland for a year, then returned home to teach Latin and history for two years at New Garden Boarding School.

She presented groundbreaking shows on XFM during their trail broadcasts, which helped to win their licence.

At Sounds Mary Anne met fellow teenager James Brown (legendary writer and publisher, not the Godfather of soul) who became a lifelong friend.

James moved to NME as Features Editor and when Mary Anne returned to London from LA, he promptly asked her to work with him at NME. Mary Anne spent three years on the newsdesk and as a major feature writer on cover stories on artists from Ice Cube to Nirvana...

She went on with James Brown to form part of the original team he put together to launch Loaded magazine.

In 2009 she returned to the festival with Joker, The Gaslamp Killer and Martyn, and in 2010 again with Flying Lotus and also with new British producers/DJs Roska and Joy Orbison. and she follows this in August 2008 with the 'Generation Bass' special curated at her invitation by the original Dubstep Warz DJs. Mary Anne released a definitive underground compilation album in June 2008 'Evangeline' on the Planet Mu label, featuring exclusive dubs from some of her favourite artists operating on the electronic underground scenes she supports, following her notorious debut for the label 'Warrior Dubz' in October 2006.

Mary Anne curated her 2nd stage for BBC Radio1 Sonar Festival in June 2008, featuring Mala, Flying Lotus and Shackleton...

She was asked to speak often—on many topics—and did, but always requested additional time to give her views on the unpopular subject of education for girls. They were married in 1880. The soundtrack was Grammy Award nominated.

Hobbs is mentioned in the Half Man Half Biscuit song "Nove On The Sly" from the album Trouble Over Bridgwater.

Mary Mendenhall Hobbs, educator, writer, and speaker, was born at Florence, near Jamestown, to Nereus and Oriana Wilson Mendenhall. She followed this with two more compilations Evangeline, released in June 2008 and Wild Angels in September 2009.

Darren Aronofsky and Clint Mansell invited Hobbs to work with them on the soundtrack for the Oscar-winning film Black Swan.

Hobbs was born in Preston, Lancashire but grew up in Garstang, a small town 10 miles to the north. She remained active in the affairs of the Yearly Meeting, serving on a long list of committees and organizations. They were the parents of five children: Walter, Lewis Lyndon, Jr., Allan Wilson, Richard J.

M., and Gertrude.

As early as her student days at Howland, Mary's interest in the education of young ladies was apparent. When asked to write an essay on what she would do if given $10,000 to spend as she wished, she said that she would establish a school for girls. following the historic UK Dubstep Showcase at Sonar Festival in 2007 taking the sound out of small humid clubs for the very first time and onto an international festival stage infront of 8.5 thousand people plus with Skream, Oris Jay and Kode 9 & The Spaceape..

Mary Anne left school at the age of 16 and went to work in an egg packing factory for the princely sum of £39 per week.

She sent a couple of issues along with a CV to the Editor of Sounds music paper and landed a job with them at the age of 19.
