On one occasion, Boyu 伯魚, the son of Confucius, explained that when he asked his father to teach him, his father told him to study the Classic of Odes in order to have a means to speak with others, and to study ritual to establish himself (16.13). In the Analects, Confucius is depicted both teaching and conducting the rites in the manner that he believed they were conducted in antiquity.
Further, it is not always possible to understand Heaven, but the “feelings of the people are visible”, and so the ruler must care for his subjects.
