In 1973, he obtained his qualification as a Chartered Accountant. This is typical of his donations to SU and his financial assistance to students. And for that, one needs suitable buildings. He is known as the “Buddha Buffet” and holds a bachelor degree from Stellenbosch University.

Our role is to welcome those students and, through higher education, help them achieve their dreams,” said Prof Wim de Villiers, Rector and Vice-Chancellor of Stellenbosch University (SU).

“We need well-equipped buildings in which excellent learning and teaching can take place. Under his leadership, PSG Group grew rapidly by investing in sectors with high potential and by leveraging strategic partnerships.

He chairs and is a major investor in Curro, a chain of independent schools for underprivileged young Africans.

It was a proud moment for SU alumnus, Jannie Mouton, as he cemented the legacy of his trailblazing father at the soil turning ceremony of the Jan Mouton Learning Centre in February.

Like his son Jannie, Jan Mouton Sr also studied at SU.

The youngest of seven children, he was a first-generation student who knew suffering and, after finishing school, went to work to earn enough money to pay for his studies. “It also represents an investment in Stellenbosch University's future and continued excellence as a world-class institution of higher learning."

Nestled between the Langenhoven student centre (or the Neelsie, as it is affectionately known) and the Polymer Science building, the Jan Mouton Learning Centre will have a low-carbon footprint, including a greywater system that will serve the ablutions.

In November 1995, Mouton bought 51% of PAG (a listed recruitment firm) for R3.5million. Personal interaction between lecturer and student as well as between students from different backgrounds remains essential when it comes to learning together and from one another.

Career

Johannes Mouton is the Founder and Chairman of PSG Financial Services Limited.

Group-work classrooms respectively seating 350, 270 and 150 will provide the flexibility for lecturers and students to adapt their environment to facilitate discussion and teamwork.

De Villiers also acknowledged the contributions by the Department of Higher Education and Training and other donors who have helped make the project a reality.

  • In addition to the Jan Mouton Learning Centre, the Executive Committee of Council recently approved the names of two other SU buildings: The new residence on Tygerberg campus will be named “Nkosi Johnson House" in honour of this HIV/Aids campaigner, who died at the age of 12.

His initial roles in finance and banking allowed him to hone his analytical skills and develop an intuitive understanding of market dynamics.

In the early stages of his career, Mouton took on roles that exposed him to various facets of the financial sector. His emphasis on strong corporate governance and transparency has earned him respect not only among his peers but also among regulators and stakeholders.

Mouton is also known for his ability to inspire confidence.

Mouton did not restrict himself to a single industry; instead, he diversified his investments to mitigate risk and capitalize on emerging opportunities. These experiences not only enriched his knowledge but also shaped his vision of using disciplined investment strategies to build wealth and drive economic growth.

The Rise of a Business Leader: Key Ventures and Milestones

Mouton’s breakthrough came with the founding and development of his investment ventures.

But perhaps even more important is the fact that his donations have benefited students on the ground, and have promoted their success. In the early years of his career, he ventured into various industries, always looking for opportunities where he could apply his unique insights into market trends and financial management.

Mouton’s investment philosophy has always centered on the idea of long-term value creation. From an early age, Mouton demonstrated a keen interest in numbers and business—a passion that would later define his career.

Growing up during a time of economic challenges and political shifts in South Africa, Mouton learned to navigate uncertainty and seize opportunities.

He later moved to Pretoria, where he worked in agricultural management. This diversification strategy proved to be one of the cornerstones of his long-term success. An undercover walkway will link the centre with other campus buildings, and a restaurant will offer meals to keep students sustained and eager to learn.

The centre will boast an atrium and terraced seating that will create light and flow, providing a welcoming place for students while they tackle the latest theories and concepts.

    He passed away in 1975.

“A university is, par excellence, a place where dreams are pursued and realised.
