Seefried died of cancer 24 November 1988, Vienna, Austria. She made her MetropolitanOpera in New York debut in November 1953 as Susanna in Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro and appearedthere for only one season, in five performances of the part of Susanna.

Seefried, Irmgard
Biography
German-Austrian soprano who made her operatic debut in "Aida" in Aachen, 1940.
She studied at AugsburgUniversitybeforemaking her debut in Aachen as the priestess in Verdi's Aida in 1940. Her debut at the Met in New York was on 20 November 1953. Her greatest success was in the postwar years singing the operas of Mozart and Strauss. She did several concert tours of the U.S. and of the Far East during the '50s. As a child she studied with her father before entering Augsburg Conservatory, and later studied with Paoloa Novikova.
She began to sing the leadingparts in 1942 by singing the part of Agathe in Weber's Der Freischütz in 1942, and the next year she made her debut at ViennaStateOpera by singing the part of Eva in Wagner's Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg conducted by Karl Böhm. From then on, she remained with the ensemble of the ViennaStateOperauntil her retirement in 1976.
She sang at the SalzburgFestivalevery year from 1946 to 1964 in operas, concerts and recitals.
She appeared at the RoyalOpera House, CoventGarden in London from 1947 to 1949, and also La Scala in Milan, the Edinburgh Festival, etc.
She was noted for clarity of voice and an appealing stage presence.
