His older brother Haran, the father of Lot, died in Ur sometime before this migration took place.

Terah, after living in Haran for five years, dies at the age of 205. Abraham passes this severe test and is told the entire world will be blessed through his descendants.

Soon after this event God tells Abraham (Genesis 12:1 - 2), who is now 75 years old, to leave Haran and take his family to the land of Canaan (the land of promise). His name is Moses.

Important Abraham Dates

1960 B.C. - Abraham (Abram) is born in Ur of the Chaldees. She treated Hagar so poorly that the slave-woman ran away, only to return when she was met by an angel, who promised that her child would also become a great nation.

God responded by again reassuring Abram of his promise.

By then, Abraham and his wife did not have any children. As a nomadic pastoralist, Abram could easily move his possessions and tents from place to place. Isaac is spared when the Angel of the Lord stops his father from sacrificing him.

Abraham, the "father of the faithful," lives to see his son turn 75 and his grandson Jacob (later renamed Israel) to the age of 15.

By then, he and his wife were so old that it was naturally impossible to have children anymore. And he believed the Lord, and He counted it to him as righteousness.”
Finally, when Abraham was 100 years old, his wife Sarah bore him a son. God says that he will bless those who bless him and curse those who curse him (Genesis 12:3)!

The Eternal's plan for man, through a single person, was so important that God personally promised to treat anyone the same way they treated Abram and his descendants!

In Genesis 15 God promises Abram that his wife Sarai will no longer be barren, but will bare him a child to be his heir.

He then sent his most trusted servant to find a wife for Isaac from among his extended family in distant Harran.

Abraham married again, this time to a woman named Keturah, with whom he had seven sons.

Sometimes he despaired or made wrong choices. In something that was considered quite normal at the time, Abram married his half-sister, Sarai.

The Call of Abram

Around the year 2095 BC, at the age of 75, Abram received a dramatic call from God to “Go from your country and your kindred and your father’s house to the land that I will show you.” This call included a wonderful promise: “I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing.

The book of Hebrew summarizes: “And thus Abraham, having patiently waited, obtained the promise” (Hebrews 6:15).

Abraham as an example of faith

In the New Testament, Abraham is mentioned as an example of faith: “By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to a place that he was to receive as an inheritance.
