Jean-Claude Decaux began working at the age of 16 putting up posters to promote his parents’ store and other local businesses.
He went onto specialise in roadside displays, until the day when a finance law introduced a cripplingly high tax on roadside advertising that made it impossible for his company to survive. In 2002, with the assistance of JC Decaux, a new Grand Prix award was introduced at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity in the category of "Best Outdoor Advertising."
Jean-Claude Decaux's net worth is currently estimated at $4.2 billion by Forbes magazine.
The business of Decaux's company rapidly expanded. The company's offices are now located in more than 40 countries worldwide, employing 7,900 staff members. Jean-Claude achieved everything in his life on his own. Undeterred, Decaux became the founder of the international group "JC Decaux." The company's headquarters are located in Neuilly-sur-Seine, France.
Currently, the Decaux family owns 69% of the company's shares. He set up his own company, in 1955 at age 18. Decaux's pioneering idea of providing free bus shelters in exchange for advertising space transformed the urban landscape and set new standards in the industry.
Achievements and Impact
Decaux's relentless pursuit of innovation and quality propelled JCDecaux SA to unprecedented success.
One of their innovations was the invention of the modern public toilet called the "Sanisette."
Family Business
"JC Decaux" is a family business. In 1964, his firm almost went bankrupt.
You can see advertisements for Chanel and Louis Vuitton there. He is one of the most prominent businessmen in France. This brought the Group into new countries and into transport systems and billboard advertising. In the 1980s, JCDecaux began to operate in other major European countries, such as Germany, Spain and the UK, before it opened offices in the USA in 1994.
However, this project did not last long as the French government banned most billboard advertisements. In 1999, along with his sons, Jean-Claude Decaux decided to acquire Avenir.
