Pairin was not allowed to be sworn in as Chief Minister. Subsequently, he practised law with a local legal firm. The eldest half brother, Charles Abbie Kitingan is a retired sergeant major who lives in Keningau. Pairin was not allowed to be sworn in as Chief Minister. 26 .
He attended La Salle Secondary School, an all-boys school, located in Kota Kinabalu.[1] He won a Colombo Plan scholarship and went on to read law at the University of Adelaide and upon completing his study, he came back to Sabah to work as a State Counsel with the Sabah Legal Department and was later made Deputy Public Prosecutor.
They have two sons, Alexander and Daniel, who are both trained lawyers.
His brother Jeffrey Gapari Kitingan is also a politician, a former vice-president of Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) after being former member of Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS), Parti Bersatu Rakyat Sabah (PBRS), Parti Angkatan Keadilan Rakyat (AKAR Bersatu), and United Pasokmomogun Kadazandusun Murut Organisation (UPKO) and finally Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) after the rejection of his application to join United Malays National Organisation (UMNO).
Political career
Joseph Pairin began his active political career in 1975.
The 15 children from the marriage to Laimah Imbayan are Pairin, Paimil, Pilim, Lini, Gapari, Duin, Wina, Leijus, Joparin, Crispin, Joanna, Jovinia, Juliana, Francis and Victor. She came back to work at the library but later got a promotion to head the State Archives. Tun Sakaran Dandai of UMNO was then sworn to be the eighth Chief Minister of Sabah.[3]
Pairin is also the Huguan Siou or Paramount Leader of the Kadazandusun community for being the President of the Kadazandusun Cultural Association (KDCA), the community's principal cultural association.

The Kitingon (or Kitingan) clan is the name of the family descended from Datuk Francis Xavier Kitingon Sabanau.
Jovinia died of cancer when she was 14.

The two brothers who became well known are Datuk Joseph Pairin Kitingan andDatuk Dr. Jeffrey (Gapari) Kitingan. The second, a daughter has just completed her Year 12 and is planning to study education methods in Brisbane Queensland.
