Cristina García Rodero (born 14 October 1949) is a Spanish photographer and member of Magnum Photosand Agence Vuphoto agencies.
She has worked as a teacher. In 1968 she began her Fine Arts studies at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid where she specialized in painting and attended classes imparted by the artist Antonio López. Madrid, 2014.
The World Press Photo, Amsterdam, awarded her work in three editions of the competition (1993, 1997 and 2008). “España oculta”, Ediciones Elviria, 2024. Her work is represented by the Galería Juana de Aizpuru in Madrid and the Magnum gallery in Paris.

She then qualified as a teacher and worked full-time in education. Piedad Isla National Photography Award from the Palencia Provincial Council, 2010. Graduated in Painting from the Faculty of Fine Arts of the Complutense University of Madrid (UCM); professor of drawing and photography at the School of Art and Design of Madrid, 1974-1985, professor of photography at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the UCM, 1983-2005.
In 1973 she began a research and compilation work on festivals, traditions and rituals in Spain thanks to a grant awarded by the Juan March Foundation.
The documentary and ethnological value of her work are considerable, but the aesthetic quality of her photography makes it more than a simple visual record.
In recent years, Cristina García Rodero has traveled around the world in search of other cultures with particular traditions. This project culminated in her book España Ocultapublished in 1989, which won the “Book of the Year Award” at the Arles Festival of Photography.
The same year, García Rodero also won the prestigious W.
Eugene Smith FoundationPrize. There are more than 2,100 square meters distributed over three floors in which are displayed about 200 photographs of the artist.

Cristina García Rodero was born in Puertollano, Spain. At the age of 17 she produced her first photographic report on the festival of Santo Voto celebrated in her hometown.
This work is reflected in “España Oculta”, a project that was recognized worldwide, obtaining the award for Best Photography Book at the XX International Photography Meeting in Arles. Subsequently, she studied photography at the Escuela de Artes y Oficios [Arts and Trades School]. She worked for VU Paris agency (1989-2005) and joined Magnum Photos in 2005, of which he has been a member since 2009.

The Cristina García Rodero Museum is located in the old municipal museum of Puertollano. For the next 16 years, she also dedicated her time to researching and photographing popular and traditional festivities – religious and pagan – principally in Spain but also across Mediterranean Europe.
