Beyene once shared that he got interested in biology after hearing a talk by the renowned Ethiopian pathobiologist, Professor Aklilu Lemma, at his high school in Adama. He later played a significant role in the coalition of political parties that formed Medrek, serving as its chairman.

Born in March 1950 in a village near Shone, Badawatchu, in the eastern Hadiya Zone, Beyene did his primary education in Shone and attended secondary school at Kuyera Adventist boarding school and Atse Gelawdios in Adama.

As Ethiopia reflects on his passing, many acknowledge that his work—both as a scholar and as a politician—has left an enduring mark on the nation’s history.

His political career began in the 1990s, during a time of significant transition in the country. “Beyene was passionate about his work, always well-prepared, and well-liked by his students. His passing has drawn tributes from various sectors, including Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, who described him as “a symbol of peaceful political struggle.” Prime Minister Abiy noted that Beyene Petros played a crucial role in shaping a constructive political culture in Ethiopia, particularly advocating for non-violent approaches to political change.

Born on March 11, 1950, Beyene Petros had a distinguished career in academia.

His work focused on parasitology and public health, and he earned a reputation for his scholarly rigor and dedication to advancing scientific knowledge in Ethiopia.

Beyond academia, Beyene Petros was a pivotal figure in Ethiopian politics. In 2005, he became a professor of biology, with his research focusing on key areas such as malaria, HIV/AIDS, lung disease, and other infectious diseases.

After earning his bachelor’s degree from the former Haile Selassie I University in 1973 and his master’s degree from the University of Wisconsin, USA, in 1977, Beyene received a Ph.D. He by now is serving as chairman for EthiopianFederalDemocratic Forum.
