Born as Vai Gopalsamy to Vaiyapuri and Mariammal couple on May 22nd, 1944, in Kalingappatti Village in Thirunelveli district, Vaiko spent his teenage years in his native. Vaiko was the first member of Parliament and chief of a registered political party in the country to be detained under the Prevention of Terrorism Act, 2002. He has also been elected to the Lok Sabha twice.
Vaiko said he had raised 13 attention motions in the House on the plight of Sri Lankan Tamils.
Earlier, Stalin also appreciated DMK MPs M Shanmugam and MM Abdullah, whose tenure also ended on Thursday. In 1993, Vaiko started MDMK due to differences with Karunanidhi amid rumblings that Karunanidhi promoted his son M. K. Stalin to succeed him.
Vaiko was known as "Tiger Of Parliament" due to his vociferous speeches in Parliament.

Vaiko was born to a farming family in Kalingapatty near Sankarankovil, Madras Presidency.
After 14 days in judicial custody, Vaiko was released.
Vaiko has said that India should retract its ban on the LTTE, claiming the ban was a shield to suppress freedom of expression and stifle the voice of the Opposition.
In 3 April 2017 Vaiko was jailed in for sedition case filed by DMK in their 2010 regime.
In 2005, Vaiko started the Marumalarchi Blood Donors' Club.
Vaiko also supported national interlinking of rivers and Sethusamudram Shipping Canal Project. He voiced his opinions against imposing Hindi in Tamil Nadu, which gave him massive recognition among politicians. Besides, Vaiko is a renowned writer and philanthropist.

Vaiko filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) in Madras High Court requesting closure of the copper smelting plant of Sterlite Industries in Tuticorin which did not follow the waste management procedures correctly and leading to the closure of the plant.Vaiko often goes on foot marches along with his party cadres to attract attention to issues.
Vaiko unequivocally supported LTTE and other organizations fighting for a separate Tamil country in Sri Lanka.
The couple has three children together. Vaiko is a great public speaker and has excellent oratory skills.
“He has consistently raised his voice to uphold the rights of Tamil Nadu. He made a trip to Eelam at the height of the LTTE's war with Sri Lankan Army. Vaiko has been a bright student from the beginning and excelled in both studies and extracurricular activities like elocution and drama.
He graduated with his Bachelor's degree with a Gold medal and pursued his Master's degree from Presidency College in Chennai.
He also conveyed his wishes to actor Kamal Haasan, P Wilson, SR Sivalingam and poet Salma who were sworn in as MPs on Friday. Vaiko has undergone a month-long padayatra in Tamil Nadu for the interlinking of inter state rivers in India.
He married Renuka Devi on 14 June 1971. He has two daughters and a son.
Vaiko is the general secretary of the MDMK party..
Vaiko was a part of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and was formerly seen as the ideological protege of former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Kalaignar M.Karunanidhi.
