He is the son of Sisir Adhikari, former Union Minister of State for Rural Development in the Manmohan Singh government.
Credited as the man who galvanised the people of Nandigram under the umbrella of the Bhumi Uchhed Pratirodh Committee, when rumours of land acquisition for a chemical hub had triggered a movement, Suvendu Adhikari was a member of the Legislative Assembly from Contai.
He was appointed Leader of the Opposition and later won the 2024 Lok Sabha election.

Suvendu Adhikari is an Indian politician and member of the 15th Lok Sabha and the 16th Lok Sabha.
He was also a member of Lok Sabha from Tamluk from 2009 to 2016 and the chairperson of Jute Corporation of India from 2020 to 2021.

Suvendu Adhikari, a prominent figure in West Bengal politics, has had a fascinating and controversial career.
He started his political career as a member of the Indian National Congress from 1995 to 1998.
The same day, he also gave up the primary membership of the TMC.
• 2020: On 19 December 2020, he signed the primary membership of the Bharatiya Janata Party.
• 2021: In the 2021 West Bengal Assembly Elections, he defeated Mamata Banerjee from the Nandigram seat by 1736 votes. This move was considered a major blow to the TMC.
He contested against Mamata Banerjee in the 2021 West Bengal Assembly Elections winning the Nandigram constituency. An honours graduate, he was born on 15 December 1970. The same year, he was elected as a councillor from the Contai Municipality of West Bengal.
• 1998: He left the primary membership of INC to join Mamata Banerjee-led All India Trinamool Congress (AITC or TMC).
After walking out, Adhikari said he was proud to be punished for defending the Army. He then joined the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) in 1998 and remained a member until 2020, when he joined the BJP.
