In 2006, at the age of 32, he ran for Mayor of Athens supported by the left-wing party, SYRIZA, which then held just over 3%, but managed to make his presence felt gaining 11.5% of the vote.

In 2008 he was elected President of SYRIZA and became the youngest party leader in the country’s history.

Four years later, in June 2012, he led his party to 27% of the vote and became leader of the Main opposition.

In the European elections of 2014 SYRIZA came first place in Greece, while at the same time he was head of the campaign of the European Left and candidate (spitzenkandidat) for the Presidency of the European Commission.

From December 2012 to December 2015 he wasVice-President of the Party of the European Left.

In the elections of January the 25th 2015 SYRIZA wone the elections receiving 36% of the vote and on January the 26th 2015 he was sworn in as Prime Minister of the Hellenic Republic.

He retook office on September the 21st after securing a second consecutive election victory with 35% of the vote.

From the elections of July the 7th 2019 to June the 29th 2023, he served as Leader of the Main Opposition.

Since September 2024 he is a member of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe and in March 2024 he was elected President of the Commission for the Western Balkans of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.

In 2024, he founded the “Alexis Tsipras Institute for Peace, Justice, Sustainable Development”.

His partner is Betty Baziana, with whom he has two sons, Phoebus and Orpheus.

Tsipras first entered the limelight of mainstream Greek politics during the 2006 local election when he ran for the municipality of Athens under the "Anoihti Poli" (Greek: Ανοιχτή Πόλη, "Open City") SYRIZA ticket that gained 10.51% of the Athenian vote.[8][11] He did not run for the Hellenic Parliament in the 2007 election, choosing to continue to complete his term as a member of the municipal council of Athens.

He was elected Leader of Synaspismos during the 5th Congress on 10 February 2008, after previous Leader Alekos Alavanos decided not to stand again due to personal reasons.[12] Tsipras became Leader of Synaspismos at the age of 33, thus becoming the youngest ever leader of a Greek political party.

From 1995 to 1997 he was an elected member of the Central Council of the National Students Union of Greece (EFEE).[8]
