He is a devoted cyclist and enjoys playing tennis. Since November 2004, Mr Kallas has been Vice-President of the European Commission in charge of Administration, Audit and Anti-fraud.
In May 2004, Mr Kallas was appointed a Member of the European Commission, working in the field of Economic and Monetary Affairs.
In 1991, Kallas was nominated as the President of the Bank of Estonia. Kallas was appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs.
In subsequent governments, he served as Minister of Finance (1999-2002) and Prime Minister (2002-2003). Kallas is related to the renowned Estonian poet Betti Alver. From 1972 to 1990 Kallas was a member of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union.
