Raychelle Omamo, whose full name is Raychelle Awour Omamo, is a Kenyan lawyer and politician. In addition, she has also served as a Permanent Representative to UNESCO for a period of six years from 2003 and 2009.
For 27 years, Omamo has been serving as a Senior Counsel and an Advocate for High Court.
Raychelle attended the University of Kent at Canterbury, UK, to pursue the law and also went to the Kenya School of Law.
Family
Omamo was the father of Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Raychelle Omamo and her brother, Mr Jacob Ojoo Omamo, is embroiled in the tussle with two sons of the late politician’s cousin.
The disputed land measuring 8.4 hectares in Utonga, Siaya County where documents were seen by the Nation show the dispute began in 1999 when her father was the Member of Parliament for Muhoroni Constituency.
Omamo served as the chairperson for only two years from 2001 and 2003.
Prior to her current position, Omamo has worked in numerous Kenya Government taskforces and Commissions involving enhancing of rule of law. Furthermore, in 2002 she was a recipient of the ICJ (K) Jurist of the Year award. For young Raychelle Omamo, Jamhuri birthed a spark in her eager mind.

Raychelle Awuor Omamo is a Kenyan attorney and an advocate of the High Court of Kenya, currently serving as the Cabinet Secretary for Foreign Affairs. Raychelle has served on a number of Kenya Government taskforces and commissions which related to the advancement of the rule of law include the Task Force on Landlord and Tenant Law.
The Task Force on the Establishment of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and also as Counsel to the Ndung’u Commission. She went on to serve as an Ambassador for Kenya to France and in 2014 was appointed the first female Cabinet Secretary for Defence.
Raychelle’s achievement in a profession that boasts over 13,000 members, almost half of whom are women, reminds us that many barriers still need to be broken as we normalize women’s leadership.
Raychelle is a Senior Counsel and an Advocate of the High Court for over 27 years. Her passion grew as she practiced her chosen field through contributing to several new initiatives including being a founding council member of the Kenyan Chapter of the Federation of Women Lawyers – FIDA in the early nineties. The Law Society of Kenya is the country’s premier bar association.
Omamo was appointed as the CS for Foreign Affairs on 14th January 2020 by H.E Uhuru Kenyatta.
She took the foreign affairs docket from her predecessor Monica Juma who is currently heading the Ministry of Petroleum and Energy. In that capacity, she became the first woman in the history of Kenya to head the Ministry of Defense.
Omamo served in the ministry for 7 years from 2013 to 2020.
Some of these taskforces include the task force on Landlord and Tenant Law, Task Force on the Establishment of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
Omamo has also served as an Ambassador to France with accreditation to Spain, Portugal, the Holy See, and Serbia. She is the first Kenyan female ambassador to France, Portugal, The Holy See and Serbia and the Permanent Delegate of the Kenya to UNESCO.
Since its establishment by an Act of Parliament in 1949 the LSK has only had one female chairman in its entire history – Raychelle Awuor Omamo, who was elected in 2001.
Raychelle has contributed to the advancement of the rule of law, the fair administration of justice and the protection of human rights in Kenya and in Africa and was awarded Jurist of the Year in 2002.
The Ministry of Defense was then handed over to Eugene Wamalwa.
The run-up to Kenya’s independence was a difficult period in our history, but the attainment of it was an exhilarating window into new possibility. In her capacity as a diplomat, Ambassador Raychelle was privileged to represent Kenya as her Ambassador to France with accreditation to Spain, Portugal, the Holy See and Serbia.
