Voters re-elected Lincoln to the Illinois General Assembly in 1838 and 1840. It is perhaps in this arena where Lincoln’s star shone brightest. Known for his leadership during the Civil War, he worked to preserve the Union and eventually abolished slavery, earning the nickname “Great Emancipator.” His life was tragically cut short on April 14, 1865, when he was shot by John Wilkes Booth.
