He taught a course on leadership in Kenya’s public health system. He is a Fellow of the African Academy of Sciences (AAS), where he was also Head of Programmes, before moving to the African Research and Resource Forum (ARRF) as founding Director. He successfully defended the seat in subsequent elections under Narc and ODM, until 2013 when he was elected Kisumu County Senator.
He is married to Dorothy Nyong’o, a public health expert and managing trustee of the Africa Cancer Foundation.
They have five children. He earned both his Master’s and PhD degrees, completing them in 1977.

Nyong’o has remained focused on development and democracy. In 1987, he took up the position of Head of Programs at the African Academy of Studies where he served until 1991.
In 1992, he joined active politics, running for and winning the Kisumu Rural MP’s seat on a Ford Kenya ticket in 1993. From October to December 2013, Professor Nyong'o was a Brundtland Senior Leadership Fellow at the Harvard T.H.
Chan School of Public Health. His leadership has earned praise for transforming the lakeside city.
Family Life and Lupita Nyong’o
Prof. In 1995, his efforts in research and democracy earned him the German Africa Award.
In 2013, Nyong’o was invited to Harvard University as a Brundtland Senior Leadership Fellow. Vision 2030 was also his brainchild, a brilliant blueprint that will move Kenya to a middle-income economy by the year 2030.
Prof Nyong’o performed exceptionally above expectations when he was appointed the minister for medical services in 2008.
Together with Charity Ngilu in 2004, they initiated a process to provide Kenyans with universal health coverage.
His reign as a Member of Parliament for Kisumu Rural saw several schools constructed and a lot more expanded and upgraded. Peter Anyang’ Nyong’o is a respected Kenyan scholar, politician, and author.
As Minister for Planning, he helped design Vision 2030, Kenya’s long-term development blueprint.
While at the Ministry of Medical Services, he promoted affordable healthcare. This leadership role marked the beginning of his journey in public service.
After completing his undergraduate studies, Nyong’o proceeded to the University of Chicago in the United States.
In 2013, he transitioned to the Senate, representing Kisumu County. As the Minister, he developed and played a key role in the implementation of the PRSP, Poverty Reduction Strategy for wealth and employment creation which NARC government used as a development blueprint. He is currently the party’s acting leader.
