    For many years this hung, in the anti-chamber to the National Portrait Gallery’s Bloomsbury room, alongside three vast group portraits of First World War generals.

    Ottoline had numerous family connections to the British aristocracy.     Later life

    Later, Lady Ottoline remained a regular host to the adherents of the Bloomsbury Group, in particular Virginia Woolf, and to many other artists and authors, who included WB Yeats, LP Hartley, T.S.

    Eliot, and an enduring friendship with Welsh painter Augustus John. Both moved in very different circles from his and while he did not always appreciate their friends, his growing reputation as an artist and entertaining guest made Gertler something of a social find. She was an influential patron to many of them, and a valued friend, who nevertheless attracted understandable mockery, due to her combination of eccentric attire with an aristocratic manner, extreme shyness and a deep religious faith that set her apart from her times.

    A century and six years later, an admirer of this aristocrat founded a college (NCH) in her house’s mirror image on the square’s Northern side, and named its academic salon after her.

     

    What had she done to deserve this honour?

     

    Lady Ottoline Morrell was what modern jargon would call a facilitator, and the Edwardians called a patroness.

    Ottoline, far from being a lion-huntress…was a lion herself, a creative artist of the private life…In the company of her distinguished friends she seemed of their spiritual kin, and in force and originality of personality wholly their equal. It is a miracle.

     

    Shortly thereafter Lionel Gomme died in her arms of a brain hemorrhage.

     

    She was a liberal in politics, and strongly supported her MP husband.

    The Lady Ottoline Violet Anne Morrell (16 June 1873 – 21 April 1938) was an English aristocrat and society hostess. However, both spouses agreed to lead a free lifestyle. A Crisis of Brilliance: Five Young British Artists and the Great War.

    Her best-known relative was her cousin Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, who married the Duke of York (later King George VI) in 1923, became Queen when his brother, King Edward VIII, abdicated in 1936, and who spent much of the twentieth century known as the Queen Mother.

    Morrell was known to have many lovers.

    Ottoline then seized me on my return to the house and talked for one hour and a half in the asparagus bed, on the subject, far into the dark night. I think my excitement may be excused.
