“She and President Obama—we all sat together, and he was so charming. Now with the passing of a few weeks, I managed to have a face-to-face chat with him, asking him of course, about the famous dress.

“It should be classical, glamorous, and timeless – but still have India in it,” he says, recalling the way he visualized it.

For her more public appearance at last week’s National Democratic Convention in Philadelphia, the First Lady pledged allegiance to another New York designer, by wearing a blue cap-sleeved Christian Siriano dress.

There is no word yet as to which designer gown she will wear at tonight’s State dinner in honor of the Lees’ visit.

Yet he is thrilled about the chance to design for Michelle Obama. “It’s unbelievable that it happened to me.

The occasion also celebrates the 50th anniversary of diplomacy between the two nations.

Fashion observers might view Khan’s alliance with the First Family as a different kind of diplomacy.
