And so stylish. If you look at Ms. Obama – even though the dress was a very strong dress – she had it in her control.
Khan likes to call it his lab.
His own office overlooks the garment district – peer out of the vast bare windows around evening and the tall buildings across the street look like a jewel-box, a miniature doll house with people in lit-up windows working with fabric, stitching and going about the business of dressing New York.
Ever since the news broke that he was designing First Lady Michelle Obama’s gown for the State Dinner in honor of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Khan’s phone hasn’t stopped ringing.
“She and President Obama—we all sat together, and he was so charming. Now with the passing of a few weeks, I managed to have a face-to-face chat with him, asking him of course, about the famous dress.
“It should be classical, glamorous, and timeless – but still have India in it,” he says, recalling the way he visualized it.
For her more public appearance at last week’s National Democratic Convention in Philadelphia, the First Lady pledged allegiance to another New York designer, by wearing a blue cap-sleeved Christian Siriano dress.
There is no word yet as to which designer gown she will wear at tonight’s State dinner in honor of the Lees’ visit.
Strapless, very Marilyn Monroe. At an early age he learned to understand the intricacies of fabric: “When you know your fabric, fabric talks to you. You are smitten by the magic. “Ballet,” he confirms as another rack of show-stopping gowns rolls past us. You have to know more than just making dresses in fashion—you have to also understand lifestyle.
This marks the first official state visit by a Singaporean Prime Minister in more than 30 years. For that outing, she wore the Remi dress in canvas and charcoal.
Khan said via e-mail Tuesday that the dress was designed “with the idea of something similar to a dress in my resort 2017 collection. He decided to go with an old Indian fabrication, teiki work, which is sterling silver or gold metal sequins, working them in flowers inspired by Andy Warhol, on champagne tulle, lined with chiffon, pairing it with a very modern cut and style.
The impression is glittering but as Khan points out, he subdued the glitter by antiquing the silver.
You come here as a student and live here for 30 years. There are so many types of fabrics – fabric will tell you how it wants to work with you.”
At 19, he came to America and worked with the noted designer Halston. A crew of assistants are sewing tulle straps to custom Christian Louboutin shoes at a table nearby, next to a stack of intricate handmade flower crowns.
Currently he’s preparing his collection for Fashion Week in New York.
Yet he is thrilled about the chance to design for Michelle Obama. “It’s unbelievable that it happened to me.
The occasion also celebrates the 50th anniversary of diplomacy between the two nations.
Fashion observers might view Khan’s alliance with the First Family as a different kind of diplomacy.

Within the depths of Naeem Khan’s New York studio, behind piles of tulle and racks of crystal-embellished chiffon, there hides a rather remarkable photograph.
