"It was a complicated assignment. When she’s not tracking the personal style of Hollywood’s elite, Kelsey also covers designer collabs and industry news.
Before taking her talents to Marie Claire, Kelsey was the Senior Fashion Editor at Bustle, where she oversaw the site’s fashion coverage. It was an honor to be photographed by Annie for the new edition, capturing the many ways women are showing up today.”
Lately, the 61-year-old has been leaning into fashion more openly while promoting her style-focused memoir The Look, which revisits standout outfits and moments from her eight years as first lady.
Back then, casual fashion wasn’t something she wore often, but since leaving the White House, she’s had fun experimenting — denim, sequins, bright hues, and bolder silhouettes have all made their way into her wardrobe.
In the family photo, the couple stood outside arm-in-arm with their daughters, Malia, 27, and Sasha, 24, in coordinated bright, festive looks.
Michelle opted to keep things fairly casual for Thanksgiving weekend, rocking a pair of white, white leg jeans, which are quickly becoming the unexpected denim trend of the season, with the likes of Julianne Moore, Martha Stewart, and Reese Witherspoon all getting on board.
She paired her trendy jeans with a white top printed with a green and yellow floral print, as well as a lime green cropped cardigan with delicate cutouts on the sleeves.
Meanwhile, Barack coordinated with his wife, wearing a simple white shirt and khaki trousers.
As for their daughters, Malia and Sasha, they both matched in boho chic looks.
Former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama just shared a very rare family portrait to mark Thanksgiving.
"I felt that I had to make sure that people could see my feminine side," she said.
In 2022, Obama shared that she wanted to wear braids during her tenure but decided not to because Americans were "not ready" and she preferred the focus be on the Obama administration's policies, not her hairstyle. She spoke at the When We All Vote rally, influencing the audience with her powerful words and casual-cool sense of style.
Breaking with tradition, Obama chose, not a modern suit or pussy bow blouse, but a pair of loose-fitting jeans and a distressed sweater vest from fashion girl-favorite R13.
Her ivory, cable-knit top was sleeveless and featured frayed hems—much more high-fashion than your usual fall knitwear. VP Harris's ballot mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, has made midwestern casual wear the focal point of his campaign wardrobe, likely to appeal to rural demographics that have historically leaned Republican.

Thus far, the Harris-Walz campaign trail has seen tortoiseshell suits, sequin gowns, and viral camo hats.

Though casual looks were a rarity as first lady, she's incorporated denim, sequins, bright colors and more into her wardrobe in recent years. In her freelance era, Kelsey contributes to publications like InStyle,Cosmopolitan, and more. She also stacked on a pair of Roxanne Assoulin's signature rainbow bracelets for a grown-up take on the friendship bracelet trend ignited by Taylor Swift (who, coincidentally, has also shown her support for Vice President Kamala Harris' presidential bid).

Obama's look is unusually laid-back for a political rally, but it falls in line with the Harris-Walz camp, for which approachable clothing has been a running theme.
Even during Barack's presidency, Michelle always made an effort to get the entire family together to celebrate. “It was a complicated assignment. In the portrait, Obama wears a dark gray henley, slightly distressed blue jeans, a brown leather belt, and matching brown suede heeled boots. Prior to Bustle, she came from a six-year stint at Seventeen.
“I felt that I had to make sure that people could see my feminine side,” she said.
She’s previously reflected on why she avoided braids while in office, saying in 2022 that she believed Americans weren’t “ready” and that she wanted the administration’s work — not her hair — to stay front and center. Earlier this month, she sported a full double-denim outfit — oversized jacket included — for her interview with Robin Roberts.
Obama has been open about the challenges of navigating fashion during her time in Washington.
And that meant the Fourth of July and Thanksgiving. It was an honor to be photographed by Annie for the new edition, capturing the many ways women are showing up today."
Obama, 61, has been embracing her style in recent months on the press tour for her fashion memoir "The Look," which chronicles iconic moments from her tenure as first lady during husband and former President Barack Obama's two terms in the White House.
