The book of Hebrew summarizes: “And thus Abraham, having patiently waited, obtained the promise” (Hebrews 6:15).

Abraham as an example of faith

In the New Testament, Abraham is mentioned as an example of faith: “By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to a place that he was to receive as an inheritance.

The Bible gives us an intimate insight into Abraham’s encounters with the Lord, e.g. We are sinners and destined for eternal death. The book of Hebrews contains many examples of people who lived by faith; verses 8-12 and 17-19 give us details about Abraham’s faith. Abraham’s faith had been tested, and proved, by his obedience to God.

The Promise fulfilled in Jesus

It would not be out of line to see the act of God, in supplying a ram in place of Isaac, as a picture of God sending Jesus as a substitute sacrifice for you and me.

For example when he married his servant Hagar to have a child by her, or when he told that his wife was just his sister, so that Pharaoh took her for his wife (Genesis 12:10-20). But on various occasions, God reassured him of His promise. Forgiveness (salvation, eternal life) is a gift from God; He initiated it and He brought it about by His own will and power.

But the summary of his life is: “Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness” (Romans 4:3).

However, God intervened by stopping Abraham from killing his son and by providing a sacrifice in the form of a ram caught in the nearby brush. He considered that God was able even to raise him from the dead, from which, figuratively speaking, he did receive him back” (Hebrews 11:17-19).

In the end, Isaac was saved because God provided a ram that was offered instead of the boy.

His name was changed to “Abraham”, which means ‘father of a multitude’, when God initiated His covenant with him (Genesis 17). His name is Moses.
