In 1965, John McCain firstly married Carol Shepp, a model from Philadelphia, thus becoming step-father to her two kids, Douglas and Andrew, from her previous marriage. Throughout his life, he maintained a focus on issues that transcended party lines, often standing firm on principles that reflected his dedication to his country and its citizens, rather than any financial motivation.

In 2015, he became Chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee. He spent much of his childhood moving between various naval bases in the United States and abroad, which instilled in him both a sense of discipline and a profound understanding of his family's military legacy. McCain's family became a central part of his life, with his children often joining him in public appearances and his daughter Meghan becoming a notable contributor to her father's legacy through her own career in media and advocacy.

Following his graduation, he completed flight school in 1960, preparing for a life of service that would ultimately lead him into combat during the Vietnam War.

  • He was assigned to become the Navy’s liaison to the U.S. Senate after the long-term damage from torture left him unable to continue combat duties.

  • McCain divorced his first wife, Carol Sheep.

  •  He married Cindy Lou Hensley, who would remain his spouse for the rest of his life.

  • McCain was elected to represent Arizona in the U.S.

    House of Representatives.

1986

  • Following his time as a member of the House, he sought a new political position and was elected to the seat vacated by Barry Goldwater in the U.S. Senate.

1989

  • McCain was accused of improperly intervening with the federal investigation of Charles H. Keating Jr., the banker who cost investors their life savings during a savings-and-loan scandal.

1968

  • His captors offered to release McCain, but he refused unless every American captured before him was freed as well.

1973

  • Following years of torture, including 3½ in solitary confinement, McCain was released from Hoa Loa prison along with other American prisoners of war.
  • McCain earned a handful of military honors including the Purple Heart, the Silver Star, the Bronze Star, the Legion of Merit, and the Distinguished Flying Cross.

Navy Lt. Cmdr. Taking his political career up a level, McCain announced in September 1999 that he would be running for presidency, his biggest Republican rival being Governor George W. Bush, who already had a large chunk of political and financial support on his side.

After returning from military service, McCain entered the world of politics, winning a seat in the U.S.

House of Representatives in 1982 before moving on to the Senate in 1986, where he earned a reputation as a maverick. As per his education, he attended about 20 schools.
