People of the Twentieth Century (1901 to 2000) Famous people of the turbulent century. It means the ending of poverty and ignorance and disease and inequality of opportunity.
The ambition of the greatest man1 of our generation has been to wipe "every tear from every eye."2 That may be beyond us, but so long as there are tears and suffering, so long our work will not be over.
And so we have to labor and to work, and work hard, to -- to give reality to our dreams.
Nehru died in 1964. Categories include politicians, scientists, sports people, spiritual figures and cultural figures. Before the birth of freedom, we have endured all the pains of labour and our hearts are heavy with the memory of this sorrow. At the stroke of the midnight hour, when the world sleeps, India will awake to life and freedom. May the star never set and that hope never be betrayed!
We rejoice in that freedom, even though clouds surround us, and many of our people are sorrow-stricken and difficult problems encompass us.
They are of us and will remain of us whatever may happen, and we shall be sharers in their good and ill fortune alike.
The future beckons to us. We have to build the noble mansion of free India where all her children may dwell. The past clings on to us still in some measure and we have to do much before we redeem the pledges we have so often taken.
In 1942, Indira married Feroze Gandhi with whom they had two sons – Rajiv (b. 1946).

On the eve of India’s independence, Nehru gave a speech to Congress and the nation – known as “Tryst with Destiny”
“Long years ago we made a tryst with destiny, and now the time comes when we shall redeem our pledge, not wholly or in full measure, but very substantially.
This is no time for petty and destructive criticism, no time for ill will or blaming others. Are we brave enough and wise enough to grasp this opportunity and accept the challenge of the future?
Freedom and power bring responsibility. We believe also that if any government deprives a people of these rights and oppresses them the people have a further right to alter it or abolish it.”
During the 1920s and 1930s, he actively participated in the civil disobedience campaigns and was jailed on several occasions.
Nehru’s speech “Tryst with Destiny” symbolized India’s meeting with its destined future as a free nation, ready to create and lead its own course.
In 1962, India was involved in a conflict with China over a border dispute.

Long years ago we made a tryst with destiny, and now the time comes when we shall redeem our pledge, not wholly or in full measure, but very substantially.
At the stroke of the midnight hour, when the world sleeps, India will awake to life and freedom.
That future is not one of ease or resting but of incessant striving so that we might fulfil the pledges we have so often taken and the One we shall take today.
