He holds a Juris Doctor degree from Harvard Law School, a Master's degree in Public Policy from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, and a Bachelor's degree in Humanities from Harvard College. He held a similar role with Google before that. Previously, Elliot served as the Bernard Schwartz Adjunct Senior Fellow in Business and Foreign Policy at the Council on Foreign Relations, after having helped to create the first stand-alone course dedicated to exploring the human rights responsibilities of global business at Columbia Business School, a course he led for almost 15 years.

Schrage began his legal career with Sullivan & Cromwell, where he specialized in U.S. securities offerings, mergers and acquisitions, and complex corporate transactions, including project financing for the Euro Disneyland theme park.

He then worked as managing director of the New York office of Clark & Weinstock, a public policy and management consulting firm.

He also served as the Senior Fellow for International and Business Policy and the Bernard L. Schwartz Fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations in New York. Elliot Schrage is highly regarded by his co-workers, friends, and family.

Schrage has served on the American Association for the Advancement of Science's Committee on Scientific Freedom and Human Rights, and the U.S.

Department of Treasury Advisory Committee on International Child Labor Enforcement. The interview was panned and negatively rated in the press, with Schrage attracting criticism for his poor handling of Facebook's privacy policies. In addition, he worked as a consultant for various international corporations on corporate social responsibility.

Schrage previously served as the Vice President of Global Affairs at Gap Inc., the largest specialty retail company in the United States.

Upon joining Google, Schrage inherited the company's controversy regarding censoring search results in China. His board experience includes serving as a trustee of the Harvard Law School Association of New York, Director of the International League for Human Rights, and the Director of the Medicare Beneficiaries Defense Fund.

Schrage, his wife, and their children reside in San Francisco, California.
