On Saturday, a sit-in of the Baloch Solidarity Committee in Quetta was cracked down on and sixteen workers, including BYC leader Dr Mahrang Baloch, were detained, after which the protest that started in Balochistan spread across the country.

Following these arrests, Balochistan National Party (BNP) chief Akhtar Mengal called for a strike across Balochistan on March 25 and also announced a long march from Wadh to Quetta on March 28.

However Dr.

Abdul Malik said that even today he has hope pinned on party leaders Nawaz Sharif and President Zardari. Nevertheless, it’s still our wish. For instance, we have our own grievances against the centre, bureaucrats and the army which is that Islamabad wants to own everything, but they neglect us in the sense that we are a majority province (area-wise), we have resources and are situated strategically.

It is then that the police became a veritable force, although when we came to power it was in a dilapidated state.

  • Do you think that the situation in Balochistan improved after the 18th Amendment which made the provinces autonomous to a large extent, did it help alleviate the problems of the province?

AMB: 18th Amendment is a huge feat in itself.

“Balochistan witnessed unprecedented corruption which has resulted in the destruction of the province during the last 10 years,” he added.

However, Dr Baloch said he was not aware of any inquiries by the National Accountability Bureau against his predecessor, Nawab Aslam Raisani, his cabinet members, legislators and or any government official.

Abdul Malik Baloch

Abdul Malik Baloch (Balochi عبدالمالک بلوچ ) is a renown visionary politician and Baloch nationalist.

But if you dig history then the largest left-wing alliance was that of NAP.

  • What’s your take on militant Baloch nationalism and militancy, insurgency? Abdul Malik Baloch has started his political career under the platform of Baloch Student Organization BSO and later on in 1988, with the collaboration of his senior political fellows he established a nationalist political party, Balochistan Natioanl Movement.

There was a leadership conflict. Dr Allah Nazar Baloch has been leading his BLF insurgents from his hideouts in Balochistan. Baloch talks to Narratives Magazine…

Balochistan’s problem has to be seen from a broader perspective. PDM is a mainstream, broader front and the left, secular, democratic front, we tried our best for it, but it didn’t materialise.

Dr Baloch said his government would financially compensate the families who lost their members to violence. We have done politics since we were in high school, have seen martial law, difficulties. We [provincial government and FC] will collectively solve all the issues facing our province,” he said.

Efforts by previous governments to win over a medley of Baloch separatist groups – including Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA), Baloch Republican Army (BRA) and Baloch Liberation Army – failed miserably in the past.

Dr Baloch, however, believes only political engagement is the way forward.

ISLAMABAD: Unlike his predecessors, he’s not a khan, a nawab or a sardar. The politics of National Awami party (NAP) was the politics of BSO. We were like a student wing of NAP. Now that situation doesn’t exist.
