He started his western education at Mayo-Belwa Elementary School in January 1952, proceeded to Yola Middle School in January 1955 and commenced his secondary school education in the same school in January 1958. His reputation for discipline and leadership made him an attractive political figure.
He first entered the political scene as a supporter of democratic governance during Nigeria’s military era, aligning himself with pro-democracy movements.

Nyako is also a farmer, He is the President of the Horticultural Crops Growers Association of Nigeria, the Practicing Farmers Association of Nigeria and the Apex Farmers Association of Nigeria. Two years later, he was appointed the Deputy Chief of Defence Staff and retired from the Service in September 1993 with the rank of Vice Admiral.
