While living in Springfield, Lincoln met Mary Todd, the daughter of a wealthy slave-holder from Lexington, Kentucky. Officials removed the coffin from the train to lie in state at ten locations along the trip.
Lincoln was buried at Oak Ridge Cemetery, near Springfield, Illinois, on May 4, 1865. His funeral took place shortly after noon in the White House on April 19.
This he stated most movingly in dedicating the military cemetery at Gettysburg: "that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain--that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom--and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth."
Lincoln won re-election in 1864, as Union military triumphs heralded an end to the war.
In perhaps his most controversial move, Lincoln suspended the constitutionally guaranteed writ of habeas corpus on April 27, 1861. He also voted to censure President James K. Polk for usurpation of powers regarding the Mexican-American War in 1848—a vote that later seemed inconsistent with some of Lincoln’s own actions during the American Civil War.
Lincoln-Douglas Debates
After completing his term in Congress, Lincoln returned to Springfield to practice law in 1849.
In 1979, Attanayake began her career as a singer with the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation. Congress finally ended the controversy, but not the practice, bypassing the Habeas Corpus Act of 1863, which temporarily legitimized the suspension of the writ of habeas corpus.
Controversy also plagued Lincoln’s record as commander-in-chief.
