However, Columbus was the first to travel to America and establish permanent settlements. In January 1493, leaving several dozen men behind in a makeshift settlement on Hispaniola (present-day Haiti and the Dominican Republic), he left for Spain.
He kept a detailed diary during his first voyage. The Portuguese were the earliest participants in this “Age of Discovery,” also known as “Age of Exploration.”
Starting in about 1420, small Portuguese ships known as caravels zipped along the African coast, carrying spices, gold and other goods as well as enslaved people from Asia and Africa to Europe.

Christopher Columbus' First Voyage
At the end of the 15th century, it was nearly impossible to reach Asia from Europe by land. However, in 1500, on the orders of the Spanish monarchy, Columbus was arrested and placed in chains. Empty-handed, the explorer returned to Spain, where he died in 1506.

Christopher Columbus (1451–1506) was an Italian explorer, colonizer, and navigator.
He claimed in his diary entries, his steely will held the crew together when they feared they would never reach land.
“Here the men lost all patience, and complained of the length of the voyage, but the Admiral encouraged them in the best manner he could, representing the profits they were about to acquire, and adding that it was to no purpose to complain, having come so far, they had nothing to do but continue on to the Indies, till with the help of our Lord, they should arrive there.” Diary entry, 10 October 1492
However, his autocratic style created friction on the boats that he guided.
His career in exploration started when he was very young.
