His ship was so badly damaged that he and his crew were stranded on Jamaica for two years until help from Hispaniola finally arrived. Columbus day was made a federal holiday in 1971. His descriptions of the native peoples, geography, and plant life do give us some clues though. Unlike Diego, who was recognized as Columbus's legitimate heir, Fernando's status was more complicated due to his illegitimate birth.
He soon returned to the New World but never found the riches he expected. As a result, the once vibrant cultures of Indigenous peoples were irrevocably altered, leading to loss of identity and heritage. Columbus enslaved many of these people and forced them to mine for riches. He is remembered as the principal European discoverer of the Americas and he helped bring the Americas to the forefront of the western consciousness.
However, Columbus faced numerous challenges during and after his expeditions. Undeterred, Columbus continued to refine his navigational techniques and studied ocean currents that could facilitate his planned voyage. Since he thought he was in the Indies, he called the native people “Indians.” In several letters he wrote back to Spain, he described the landscape and his encounters with the natives.
Columbus commanded the Santa María, while the Niña was led by Vicente Yanez Pinzon and the Pinta by Martin Pinzon.3 This was the first of his four trips.
On October 12, a crew member aboard the Pinta sighted one of the Bahama Islands. On October 12 land was sighted. He named the land San Salvador. Sailing under the flag of Spain aboard the Santa Maria with two accompanying ships, the Pinta and the Niña, Columbus successfully navigated the uncharted waters of the Atlantic.
There were rumors from other sailors that Asia could be reached by sailing west. Ultimately, Columbus' legacy is a complex tapestry—a journey of exploration intertwined with the consequences of colonization and the suffering of Indigenous cultures.
Columbus eventually had a second son, Fernando, born in 1488, with Beatriz Enriquez de Arana, a woman with whom he had a long-term relationship.
After several weeks in jail, Columbus and his brothers were released, but Columbus was not allowed to be governor of Hispaniola anymore.
Towards the end of his life, Columbus became increasingly religious. However, Columbus was the first to travel to America and establish permanent settlements. It gives immediate feedback.
