Gaius Appuleius Diocles (104 – after 146 AD) was a Romancharioteer. His existence and career are attested by two highly detailed contemporary inscriptions, used by modern historians to help reconstruct the likely conduct and techniques of chariot racing.
Many charioteers, known as aurigae or agitatores, started as slaves but were able to earn enough money to buy their freedom through success in the races.
According to historian David Matz, Diocles won a majority of his races as a single driver (1,064 wins), a popular race-type for both drivers and spectators.
He won the most prestigious race, held immediately after the ceremonial opening procession (Pompa circensis), 110 times. But how did he gather all that money?
To put this in perspective, his earnings were said to be equivalent to the annual pay of several thousand Roman soldiers or the cost of feeding the entire city of Rome for over a year.
