To this she was summoned on the twenty-eighth of October, 1818.

Her early education was such as was attainable at that period in the colony. She discussed war and politics, managed their farm, and took care of their family while her husband was away.

She was the youngest of two daughters, who were the only children of George and Elizabeth Hudson. She loved his sense of humor, and he admired her wit and intelligence. She was married to John Adams, a key revolutionary figure and the second U.S. President. Mr. Clay died during the war of the Revolution. I feel still more for my bleeding countrymen, who are hazarding their lives and their limbs !” To the agonized hearts of thousands of women went the roar of the cannon booming over those hills !

Her husband ever appreciated her worth, and was sustained in spirit by her buoyant cheerfulness and affectionate sympathy in the multiplicity of his cares and labors. She taught herself from her father’s library and her letters show her understanding of Enlightenment ideals like liberty, equality, and the value of education.
