Kennedy, the longtime U.S. senator representing Massachusetts, died in 2009. But her personhood was gobbled up by history, dragged under the weight of the overwhelming tragedy of it all.

Not willing to lose Carolyn to time as the 25th anniversary of her death at 33 approached, or to let her be filed away as merely a style icon, Elizabeth Bellersought to reclaim the woman who existed outside of John's aura in her 2024 book Once Upon a Time: The Captivating Life of Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy.

The biographical basics about the 5-foot-10 Boston University graduate—even before she was tasked in the spring of 1992 with overseeing a private VIP fitting for the Camelot heir at the Calvin Klein boutique at Saks Fifth Avenue—are, of course, well documented.

But Once Upon a Time is about her, and plenty of people who knew her wanted to talk about the woman who—unlike Princess Diana, the doomed public figure she's most compared to (not least because John told a friend Carolyn was "spooked" by the royal's 1997 death)—never got to share her side of the story.

Plenty of media outlets would have salivated over the prospect of an in-depth sit-down with Carolyn, but she had no interest in baring her soul.

“She’s some functionary of Calvin Klein’s … She’s an ordinary person.”

Bessette was not rich, not famous, not from an esteemed family nor Ivy League school.

In death, Carolyn didn't exactly become an afterthought in the wake of all the rabid attention—explained away as public interest—that was paid to her during the seven years she was linked to the only son of President John F.

Kennedy and Jacqueline Kennedy. He was the second of nine children the couple shared.

After graduating cum laude from Harvard University and following his turn as a Navy patrol boat commander in World War II — service that earned him a Navy and Marine Corps Medal and a Purple Heart — JFK pursued a line of work his grandfathers and father were passionate about: politics.

In his role as a public servant, JFK rose higher than the generations of Kennedys and Fitzgeralds before him: In 1961, he was sworn in as the 35th president of the United States.

Tragically, his term was cut short.

And there was something so beautiful about that."

In one photo, the power couple cut their three-tier wedding cake while another features Kennedy Jr. pictured with a faith leader and his uncle Ted Kennedy. Her parents divorced when she was 8, but her schoolteacher mother remarried a few years later, and the family moved from middle-class White Plains, NY, to tony Greenwich, Conn.

Bessette studied education at Boston University, but landed a job assisting VIP clients at Calvin Klein after graduation.

He was 46 years old.

Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, JFK’s wife

Jacqueline ″Jackie” Kennedy Onassis (née Bouvier) was born July 28, 1929, in Southampton, New York, to Wall Street stockbroker John Vernou “Black Jack” Bouvier III and socialite Janet Norton Lee.

A student of history, art and French literature, Jackie became a photojournalist for the Washington Times Herald shortly after graduating from George Washington University in 1951 with a Bachelor of Arts in French literature.

He was charmed by her poise and wit.

Another time, he arrived two hours late to dinner, and she threw a glass of wine in his face.

Which is why even a Carolyn-centric narrative, while it salvages her oft-maligned character from the scrap heap of so-called difficult women, is still relentlessly heartbreaking.

Like his older sister, JFK Jr.

crafted a varied resume over the years. But he admitted to an old friend that she was “having a heavy effect on him.”

“Well, she’s not really anybody,” he said when this pal pressed him for more details. Carolyn was 33.

Arabella and Patrick Kennedy, JFK’s daughter and son

JFK and Jackie had two other children during their marriage.

Kennedy had a cordial relationship with the press. Even if the imminent-divorce rumors had been true, the friends who knew her and John both separately and together generally conclude that they would have figured it out.

Because that is what time allows, and Carolyn and John had so little of it.

Even after the couple’s tragic death in a plane crash in 1999, Bessette remained an elusive, distant figure.

His mother, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, and his best friend, cousin Anthony Radziwill, were diagnosed with cancer in the same month. The 33-year-old law school grad had recently quit his job at the district attorney’s office and was trying to start his own magazine. They needed security. “They are everywhere … I’m not sure I can do this.”

The problems only intensified after the wedding.
