Friends say Portia misses her Los Angeles lifestyle and social circle, while Ellen wants to regain her sense of purpose by re-entering the public eye. After more than a year of living in rural England, the former talk show host is said to be homesick and desperate to save her 17-year marriage to actress Portia de Rossi.
The couple relocated to the UK in late 2024 after a string of public controversies surrounding Ellen’s behavior on The Ellen DeGeneres Show.

The announcement came through a heartfelt Instagram post on May 16.
“We had to say goodbye to Augie yesterday,” Ellen wrote. The post concluded with Ellen saying, “I don't care what Portia says, please don't call me the Deal Queen.
She was right.” She also debuted a dramatic new look—trading in her signature blonde pixie for brunette locks.

Remembering Augie
Ellen’s tribute didn’t stop with just words. Portia, I love you more everyday," Ellen wrote in her caption, along with the hashtag "Marriage For All."

They met in 2001
Ellen and Portia first met backstage at a Rock the Vote concert, however Portia had not publicly come out as gay at the time.

They started dating in 2004
They crossed each other's paths again in 2004, and broke up with their respective partners to be together.

He also told Ellen DeGeneres in 2019 that he would be too anxious as a parent, explaining on The Ellen Show: “I'd worry sick about a baby. Days later, she returned to Instagram with a message for her 136 million followers: “Thank you for all of your kind messages about Augie.”
She also posted an emotional video clip recorded just weeks before Augie’s death.
It was amazing. For the occasion, she hired a plane to fly by their house with a banner that said 15 with a heart.

Renewed vows
In February 2023, Ellen and Portia held a vow renewal ceremony at their home, for which Portia rewore her original Zac Posen wedding dress.

Three years later
In May 2008, when the California Supreme Court struck down a law banning same-sex marriage, Ellen proposed, and they got married on August 16, 2008.

15 years later
On December 1, 2018, Ellen revealed on a post on Instagram that the date marked the 15th anniversary since she and Portia started dating.
The move was meant to help them escape Hollywood chaos—but the slower pace of life reportedly backfired.
“They’re together all the time, but not connecting,” an insider told Radar. “She’s brainstorming her next big move—she’s convinced she can win back audiences, but she knows she can’t do that from a tiny village in England.”
Now, the pair allegedly view a move back to America as a last-ditch effort to repair their relationship.

On the marriage front, Gervais told The Times in 2010: “We are married for all intents and purposes, everything's shared and actually our fake marriage has lasted longer than a real one.
“I have to just trust that whatever happened during that time, which was obviously very, very difficult, happened for a reason,” she told The Hollywood Reporter.
In 2024, she returned briefly to the spotlight with a Netflix special titled Ellen DeGeneres: For Your Approval, but it received lukewarm reception, pulling in a 33% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Moving to England
As of late 2024, Ellen and Portia had relocated to an estate in the Cotswolds.
Ellen DeGeneres is reportedly planning a stateside comeback—and not just for her career.
