James "Red" Duke, a trauma surgeon who attended to Texas Gov. John Connally on the day of the John F. Kennedy assassination, has died in Houston. And, for the first time ever, they had a radio in the operating room. Boutwell says Duke was unique.
“I worked 44 years in the medical center with some of the great names in medicine, and there’s no one like Red Duke, and I don’t think there ever will be,” Boutwell says.

If you lived in Texas in the 1980s and ’90s, this name will likely ring a bell; if not, his voice probably will:
“From the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston, I’m Dr. Red Duke,” James Henry “Red” Duke Jr. used to say on his regular TV broadcasts that aired across the Lone Star State.
Duke knew this and began working on her immediately to ensure no further damage occurred. “But he had the skills of the very best trauma surgeon in the world.”
Duke was always a character, Boutwell says – always seeking attention.
He entered, saw the president’s devastating head wound, and was quickly shifted to Trauma Room 2 to take care of the governor. The accident had also fractured her pelvis, scapula, six ribs, and her first and second cervical vertebrates.
“[Duke] used to say, ‘we’re caring for a patient, not a disease,'” Boutwell says.

In 1960 he received the doctor of medicine degree from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas. Today my sister works as a registered nurse on the trauma floor at Memorial Hermann Medical Center where Dr. Red Duke and the trauma team saved her life after being transported by Life Flight.

During his general surgery residency at Parkland, he was a junior resident from 1961 to 1964 and chief resident from 1964 to 1965.

After the Kennedy assassination in Dallas, Duke went on to become a prominent Houston trauma surgeon and familiar television doctor.
In a statement, Dr.
Richard Andrassy, surgery department chairman at the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston, said Duke died Tuesday at Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston of natural causes.
During the 1980s, Duke became familiar for his thick Texas drawl and bushy red mustache featured in his nationally syndicated medical segment.
A day like no other
In 2013, Duke talked about treating Connally, who was wounded after bullets struck Kennedy's motorcade.
Chief Whitey Martin, Dr. Red Duke, and r. Dr. Duke says after he stabilized Connally, the governor was rushed into surgery.
When Devanshi first came into the emergency room (ER) at Memorial Hermann she had little chance of survival. Unresponsive and on the brink of death when the helicopter arrived, she was flown to Memorial Hermann in the Texas Medical Center and resuscitated by the nurse on the way.

That personality got Duke the gig hosting health segments that appeared on local TV stations across Texas, often at the end of a newscast.
“Red was very committed to prevention, and teaching the public about prevention,” Boutwell says.
Boutwell says famed physician William Osler was a professional role model for Duke.
Her heart was out of alignment and both of her lungs had collapsed.
