While preparing for the shooting, Angus Strathie (costume designer, winner of the Oscar award) rummaged the wagons of clothing that is historical, modern and made to order. For eighty years.
The Red Dress: A Time Machine
Let’s talk about the big one. There were plenty of midi-length skirts, cardigans, cozy turtlenecks and rounded-toe heels.
The young star has modeled for the most prestigious name in the business, Chanel, and is known for charming the likes of two of the most powerful people in the industry, designer Karl Lagerfeld and the inimitable Editor in Chief of Vogue, Anna Wintour.
No newbie to the style scene, the new mom took us on a week long, albeit drooling, journey inducing crazy-high levels of closet envy (among other things).
I wanted to roll my eyes at the synergy of it all. But in the context of the character, it’s protective.
Adaline spends most of the film hiding. There’s a distinct “Gucci-ness” to the whole film, but it’s the Frida Giannini era of Gucci—a bit retro, a bit romantic.
There’s a yellow dress later in the film—we’ll get to that—and a coat that she wears over the red gown.
But what interests me more are the accessories.
Strathie talks about rummaging through “wagons of clothing.” He pulled pieces from vintage collections, charity shops, and second-hand bins. “It was a very elegant outfit,” – says Blake, “today you don’t see anything like this.”

She doesn’t chase trends. I have a soft spot for films that are, on paper, completely ridiculous. All her accessories are vintage: handbags of the 40s and 50s, shoes from the 50s. But all of that changed when the Age of Adaline star hit the town for a week filled with whirlwind press pit-stops in New York.

Fashion addicts rejoiced the blonde bombshell’s return to the scene, and spring inspiration boards everywhere grew to the tune of climbing costume changes in what felt like Guinness Book levels of style.
“It was necessary to find what would most effectively convey the character’s story,” – he says. Blake’s textile tally this week is holding strong at an astonishing 20 looks from luxury designers like John Galliano, Marc Jacobs, Cushnie et Ochs, and Monique Lhuillier.
More fascinating than perhaps her ability to change and be interviewed that many times in a single week and still smile let alone look ravishing is the level of taste present in each and every selection.
