Who Was Anne Hathaway?
Anne Hathaway was the wife of English poet, playwright, and actor William Shakespeare.
The “best” bed of the house was typically reserved for guests.
Regardless, this is the only mention of Hathaway in the will. By 1582, he was appointed the position of outer barrister.
Following Hamnet’s death, in 1597, Hathaway and her two daughters moved to New Place, the largest residence in town, where she remained as mistress of the house for 19 years.
The Latin epitaph on her grave, likely written by her daughters, describes her as “so great a gift” and a woman who will “rise again and seek the stars.”
Modern portrayals—from novels to the 2025 Hamnet film—often use Hathaway’s given name “Agnes,” which appears in her father’s will, to reframe her role within the Shakespeare family narrative.

Fortunately for Bacon, in 1581, he landed a job as a member for Cornwall in the House of Commons.
