Career as an Illustrator and Author
1969:"The Very Hungry Caterpillar" publishedCarle's breakthrough as an illustrator came with "Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?" In 1969, he released his most famous work, "The Very Hungry Caterpillar." This beloved story has since been translated into over 66 languages and has sold more than 50 million copies worldwide.
Prolific Career:
Carle illustrated over 70 books, many of which he also wrote.
Then, he would cut and layer these papers to create his colorful pictures. She was an integral part of Carle’s life and in helping found the museum. The museum holds a vast collection of Carle’s own work, as well as work from other modern and contemporary children’s book illustrators.
In 2015, Bobbie passed away.
However, when he brought the idea to his editor, Ann Beneduce, she instead suggested a caterpillar. Carle said about her, “She was a force behind the museum. Although it contains no text, Carle’s work focuses on visual literacy and encourages young readers to look and observe. In 2009, Google even honored him by asking him to design a special "Google Doodle" for their homepage.

During the war, Stuttgart was a major industrial center that held multiple railroads and military bases, thus becoming a target for the Allies. His books aimed to replace that fear with a positive message.
Later Life and Legacy
For over 30 years, Eric Carle and his second wife, Barbara Morrison, lived in Northampton, Massachusetts.
Friend and colleague Tony DiTerlizzi — one of the premier fantasy artists of his generation and co-creator of The Spiderwick Chronicles — said about Carle after his passing, “He looked to the color in the world… He looked to the vibrancy, the beauty not just in the colors, but in all of the natural beauty that surrounded him.”[5]
