Career

In his early career as an artist, Sureniants was interested in caricatures and sketches. During the Armenian Genocide, Vardges Sureniants created a great number of paintings of survivors who found refuge in Russian Armenia.

According to Tumanyan’s children, when Tumanyan was released from prison in 1912, Surenyants painted his portrait.

Vardges Surenyants had a close relationship with Ivan Aivazovsky, who often encouraged him.

In the year 1883, Vardges Sureniants wrote his first article entitled A Few Words about Armenian Architecture.

    Vardges Surenyants: 1860-1921

    Description

    Sureniants, a multitalented artist, was born in the family of a priest.

    The same year, he went to Moscow where he became connected with many artistic circles. Some of Sureniants' caricatures were published in the Fliegende Blätter magazine. In the year 1916, the artist moved to Tiflis. There he and some other artists, including Mardiros Saryan and Panos Terlemezian, founded the Armenian Artistic Society.

    He moved to Yalta in 1917 where he was commissioned to draw the decorations for the newly built Armenian cathedral.

    There have been many posthumous exhibitions in his honour, including exhibits in Venice (1924), Yerevan (1931, 1941, 1960, 2010). The artist produced portraits of Mikayel Chamchian among others. Under the impression of massacres organized in 1895 by Sultan Abdulhamid II in Western Armenia, Sureniants created his first great historical paintings.

    Ilya Repin was one of his most prominent admirers.

        Surenyants had numerous meetings and conversations with the marine painter, as he himself mentioned in his congratulatory speech at the opening assembly of the “Union of Armenian Artists.” After Ivan Aivazovsky’s death, Surenyants created his bust.

        Haykuhi Sahakyan also spoke about Surenyants’ illustrated manuscripts (ex libris), as well as his book and press designs.

        The Armenian king Ara rejected the love of the Assyrian queen, and the enraged Semiramide declared war on Armenia.

        Linking the face of Ara with the bas-relief of the Babylonian epic hero Gilgamesh through the canvas' light and structure, the artist asserts the immortality of heroes fallen in battles for freedom. The spiritual power of the people is symbolized by the picture The Monastery of Hrispsime in which the church towers above a desert and ashy land.
