Loid is kind of a father type of an energy, and he takes care of any time there are words within the paintings—that’s his doing. I sometimes painted, but I didn’t understand that it was a lifestyle. And that type of experience also spills over into how you live the rest of your life. As a young Black student of the arts, this was all very freeing.
And I just thought that was a wonderful story, growing up. The marriage of words and images was natural for me.
