This table lamp, designed by Wilhelm Wagenfeld in 1924, is often named the Bauhaus lamp. Gropius attached great importance to clean lines, functional furniture and a minimalist atmosphere that corresponded to Bauhaus principles.
The space was characterised by a combination of natural materials and modern elements.

Gropius and Alma conducted a secret affair through liaisons and letters until her husband's death in 1911. Gropius accepted and moved to the United States, along with Marcel Breuer. The colour palette was predominantly neutral, with occasional accents in bold primary colours that were characteristic of the Bauhaus style.

Founder of the Bauhaus
This is the first comprehensive illustrated biography of one of Modern architecture's most important figures. Features more than 375 illustrations including letters, telegrams, sketches, drawings, photographs, posters, brochures, and other ephemera.
The move, however, did not save the school from increasing tensions caused by Gropius's change towards industrial design. These disagreements came to a head in 1926, when the Bauhaus found itself in financial difficulties. The memorial was destroyed by the Nazis due to its design and political overtones, but it was later rebuilt in the post-war period.
They continued their intense relationship until 1913 when Gropius visited the Berlin Secession exhibition and saw Oskar Kokoschka's painting The Tempest.

Colourful is my favourite Colour
Walter Gropius is said to have answered the question about his favourite colour, "Colourful is my favourite Colour". The room was carefully designed to create a harmonious balance between functionality and aesthetic appeal. Built to house 575 graduate students, the building complex consists of a main building, seven dormitories, a dining hall, and recreational rooms.
The competition committee chose Gropius's design from several submitted, and erected the monument in the Weimar central cemetery. The building can be seen as a turning point in the acceptance of International Modernism in the United States, an endorsement of The Architects' Collaborative as their first major project, and Gropius's largest public project since emigrating to the United States.
Benscheidt was keen for the building to demonstrate a clear break with the past and this provided Gropius and Meyer with a chance to experiment with new ideas and technologies. Because Less is More. It also brought together a fascinating and hugely influential group of teachers and artists who worked alongside each other and together left a lasting legacy despite only existing for just over a decade Gropius was fundamental in shaping this approach, and in continuing its development through his teaching in the United States.
Despite its relatively short existence, the Bauhaus had a lasting influence on the development of modern design and continues to shape aesthetic design in many areas to this day. The marriage was as tumultuous as their earlier relationship and eventually ended in divorce in 1920 when Gropius discovered Alma had begun a relationship with the novelist and playwright Franz Werfel.

Following the war and the dissolution of his marriage, Gropius threw himself back into his architectural work.
