After a two-year stint working in corporate research and at the New York Public Interest Research Group (NYPIRG) in New York City, Obama moved to Chicago, where he took a job as a community organizer with a church-based group, the Developing Communities Project.

By the advent of war, he was already well known as a Gaelic writer at a time when very little serious literature was produced in the language. She had been a tremendously influential force in her grandson’s life and had diligently followed his historic run for office from her home in Honolulu.

On November 4, lines at polling stations around the nation heralded a historic turnout and resulted in a Democratic victory, with Obama capturing some Republican strongholds (Virginia, Indiana) and key battleground states (Florida, Ohio) that had been won by Republicans in recent elections.

He died on 24 November 1996 at the age of 85 in Raigmore Hospital, Inverness, after a short illness. The wider picture in Scotland at the time is set out in our Historical Timeline.

Sorley MacLean was born at Osgaig on the island of Raasay, an island on which Scottish Gaelic was the first language at the time.

He wrote about love, heartbreak, the Cuillin, the Spanish Civil War, Hugh MacDiarmid, communism and nationalism, often several in the same poem. For the next several years, he worked with low-income residents in Chicago’s Roseland community and the Altgeld Gardens public housing development on the city’s largely Black South Side.

He would see his son only once more before dying in a car accident in 1982. Obama’s half-sister, Maya Soetoro Ng, was born in Jakarta in 1970.

At age 10, Obama returned to Hawaii to live with his maternal grandparents. Somhairle MacGill-Eain is commemorated in Makars' Court, outside The Writers' Museum, Lawnmarket, Edinburgh.

He married Michelle Obama at the Trinity United Church of Christ on October 3, 1992.

Obama went on to teach at the University of Chicago Law School from 1992 to 2003.

In 1996, Obama officially launched his own political career, winning election to the Illinois State Senate as a Democrat from the South Side neighborhood of Hyde Park.

His career was interrupted by military service during WWII, and while in North Africa he was wounded on three occasions. Over the years, MacLean taught in a number of schools, in places as far apart as Mull and Edinburgh, before becoming headteacher of Plockton High School, a post he held from 1959 until his retirement in 1972.

In many ways he brought Scottish Gaelic poetry into the modern era, and he is a key figure in modern Scottish literature.

In 1929 he went to Edinburgh University, where he became an enthusiastic shinty player before graduating in English with 1st class honours.

With Republican Senator Tom Coburn of Oklahoma, he created a website that tracks all federal spending, aimed at rebuilding citizens’ trust in government. Events such as the Spanish Civil War and the rise of Fascism were welded together with his own intense personal feelings to produce poetry that has attracted national and international acclaim.

He died on November 24, 1996 in Inverness, Scotland.

Achievements

• In June 1987 Sorley was conferred as the first freeman of Skye and Lochalsh, with a ceremony held at Portree. It put the relatively unknown, young senator in the national spotlight.

 In November 2004, Illinois delivered 70 percent of its votes to Obama (versus Keyes’ 27 percent), sending him to Washington as only the third African American elected to the U.S.

During his tenure, Obama notably focused on issues of nuclear non-proliferation and the health threat posed by avian flu. He was one of the most significant Scottish poets of the 20th century. To address the financial crisis he inherited, he passed a stimulus bill, bailed out the struggling auto industry and Wall Street, and gave working families a tax cut.
