He was in awe of Varma’s work which made him transport these themes into cinema in order to inspire the nationalistic sentiments to seek a free and independent nation. Based on its worldwide acceptance, the then Dewan of Travancore, T. Madhava Rao suggested Varma and his brother to come up with a press of their own. Ravi Varma spent the later years of his life in Mysore, Baroda and a number of other cities in the country.

This commission work would have been officially incomplete had it not been the support and undeniable assistance of his sister Mangalabai Thampuratty, and his brother C Raja Raja Varma. It was sold for a massive Rs 21.16 crore in an auction. Popularly referred to as the Father of Modern Indian Art, he was considerably adored for his realistic portrayal of Indian Gods and Goddesses.

Raja Ravi Varma Heritage Foundation

In the present day, several foundations continue to celebrate his legacy.

The title Raja was conferred as a personal title by the Viceroy and Governor-General of India.

Ravi Varma was the son of Ezhumavil Neelakanthan Bhattatiripad and Umayamba Thampurratti. The Ganesh Shivaswamy Foundation established in the year 2019 celebrated 125 years of the print legacy of the inimitable Ravi Varma Printing Press. Out of his siblings, Raja Varma, his younger brother, would later join him and assist him in his works throughout his career.

He showed special interest in portraying the charm of South Indian women.

He fathered five children, of whom the youngest son Rama Varma went on to become an artist after studying at the JJ School of Arts, Mumbai. He was also awarded three gold medals at the World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893. Alternatively, this also made him a household name and Raja Ravi Varma soon captured the hearts of all.

Notably, the house of Mavellikara was a branch of the Royal House of Travancore. Out of those, Bollywood film ‘Rang Rasiya’ and Malayalam movie ‘Makaramanju’ are the most popular ones. The last-named was also a painter and worked closely with Ravi Varma all his life.

In 1866, at the age of 18, Varma was married to 12-year-old Bhageerthi Bayi (known formally as Pooruruttati Nal Bhageerathi Bayi Thampuratty) of the royal house of Mavelikkara, another major fief of Travancore kingdom.

Bhageerthi was the youngest of three sisters, and both of her elder sisters had been adopted into the royal family of Travancore in 1857 in order to carry on the lineage. The chapter was based on Ravi Varma’s meeting with Swami Vivekananda.
