Earlier in the week, on Tuesday, July 30, McDowell also received a proclamation from Pittsburgh City Council and on Monday, July 29 a Key to the City from the Boro of Greentree where the station’s on-air studio is located.

Our own legendary afternoon DJ Sean McDowell will be hanging up the headphones on July 31st after forty-one years in radio and twenty six with WDVE.

During the final broadcast, McDowell was also presented with a proclamation from Mayor Peduto, naming July 31, as Sean McDowell Day in the city of Pittsburgh.

The Pittsburgh Steelers honored McDowell at the event, gifting him with a honorary Pittsburgh Steelers jersey as well as a special phone call from the Pittsburgh Steelers owner, Art Rooney II, at the final broadcast party.

His father, the late Al McDowell, was a longtime WTAE-TV personality.

McDowell, 63, has spent four decades in radio in southwestern Pennsylvania and has hosted the WDVE afternoon show since 1993.

PITTSBURGH, PA - Legendary WDVE-FM disc jockey Sean McDowell, a staple in the Pittsburgh radio scene since the 1970s, announced his retirement Tuesday.

iHeartMedia Pittsburgh celebrated the career of McDowell with a final broadcast Wednesday on WDVE in Pittsburgh.

Sean started his career with WYDD New Kensington in 1978, and the rest is radio history. Sign up for free Patch newsletters and alerts.

Special guests appeared including Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto as well as current WDVE personalities Randy Baumann, Val Porter and Michele Michaels and voices from WDVE’s past, Jimmy Roach, Herschel and Kenny Gibbs.

In addition, local TV celebrities, local entertainment and industry friends as well as musician Donnie Iris attended the celebratory event.

McDowell comes from a broadcasting family.

Sean McDowell announced his retirement earlier this morning with Randy Baumann and the DVE Morning Show, his last day will be July 31st.

He started his career at the former WYDD-FM in New Kensington in 1978 before moving to WTYK-FM in Washington and then to WRRK-FM, where he
spent 13 years before joining DVE.

McDowell was off the air for an extended period last year following surgery to repair a leaking mitral valve

In 2016, McDowell was inducted as a member of the Pittsburgh Rock ‘N Roll Legends, Pittsburgh’s version of the Rock ‘N Roll Hall of Fame.

We take a trip with Sean and reminisce over his twenty six year career at DVE and beyond - from stories about meeting Van Halen and the glory days of radio to receiving gifts of turntable hash. We're sad to see Sean leave, but will have two months to cherish the memories of his historical career.
