Chief Petty Officer William “Ryan” Owens will be remembered for a lot of things.
Fourteen adversaries were killed in combat.

“His death reminds us all of the constant dangers of our profession, and the very real threats to our nation,” said Commander of the Naval Special Warfare Command Tim Szymanski in a statement released on Monday.
Locally, a Virginia Beach resident described him as “always a nice guy.” Ryan will certainly be missed but he will never be forgotten for his unwavering commitment to his profession and this great country.
He was on his fifth team tour when he was killed.

Navy SEAL Killed During Yemen Raid Identified as CPO Ryan Owens
The Defense Department on Monday identified the Navy SEAL killed during a raid on al Qaeda militants as Chief Petty Officer William "Ryan" Owens.
In a statement, Defense Secretary James Mattis said Owens, 36, "gave his full measure for our nation, and in performing his duty, he upheld the noblest standard of military service."
Owens was killed in a firefight during an intelligence gathering raid that left three more SEALs wounded.
Two other SEALs were injured when their aircraft, an MV-22 Osprey, experienced what Pentagon officials described as a "hard landing."

Fourteen militants were killed, Pentagon officials said. He was a Peoria, Illinois native, a member of the Virginia Beach-based Navy SEAL Team 6, a recipient of the Navy and Marine Corps Medal, a three-time recipient of the Bronze Star Medal (two of which included the “V” for Valor, signifying heroism while in combat), and an all-around nice guy.
Ryan first enlisted in the military in 1998 and has been “assigned to East Coast-based special warfare units since 2007,” according to PilotOnline.com.
Over the weekend, Ryan Owens was killed during a raid on al-Qaida base in Yemen.
After initially training as a cryptologic technician (communications), he served his initial tour of duty at the Office of Naval Intelligence in Suitland, Maryland, before attending basic and advanced SEAL training in Coronado, California, completing training in December 2002.
His first tour as a SEAL was at a West Coast unit, followed by three consecutive East Coast unit tours.
A fourth U.S. service member was injured when a military aircraft assisting in the mission had a “hard landing” nearby, according to U.S. Central Command.
He was selected for chief petty officer in 2009. Three service members were also wounded while completing the mission. Among them were three senior al Qaeda leaders, the officials told NBC News.
Nawar Al-Awlaki, the 8-year-old granddaughter of Anwar al-Awlaki, was also killed.
