Roque dalton biography definition

Roque Dalton was born 14 May 1935 in San Salvador, El Salvador, and was killed by his own guerrilla group forty years later, also in the month of May.

Despite the brevity of his life span, Dalton wrote more than fifteen books that transformed the political and poetic spheres of his native country. An earthquake damaged the jail in which he was sufficiently for Dalton to escape. Despite his success as a writer, Dalton longed to be a soldier in the revolution. After graduation, Dalton studied law at the University of Santiago in Chile and in the University of El Salvador.

Dalton was sentenced to be executed, but the dictatorship of Colonel José María Lemus was overthrown the day before his sentence was to be carried out.

Dalton spent 1961 in exile in Mexico, writing many of the poems that were published in La Ventana en el rostro [The Window in My Face] in 1961 and El turno del ofendido [The Injured Party’s Turn] in 1962.

He attended a Jesuit all-boys school in San Salvador. Taberna y Otros Lugares, one of his most acclaimed works, was published in Prague, as was his biography of Salvadoran communist, Miguel Mármol. His political activism saw Dalton arrested on some occasions.

Career

Due to harassment from police in El Salvador Dalton moved to Mexico and began his writing career.

Following a series of reversals in 1975 Dalton was accused of being a CIA informant and was murdered by members of the ERP. A group of ERP members shot him outside his home on 10 May 1975. Dalton received military training in Cuba and returned to El Salvador in 1965 but was quickly arrested and condemned to death. The following year he joined the Communist Party; he was arrested in 1959 and 1960 for inciting students and peasants to revolt against landowners.

These groups eventually unified to form the Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front (FMLN), an armed opposition to the military dictatorship in El Salvador.

Literary Legacy

Dalton was a prolific writer, publishing numerous collections of poetry. Dalton’s writings remained influential across the world.

In Chile, he met the left-wing artist Diego Rivera.

However, a change in government saved him from execution.

Exile and Return

Released from prison in 1964, Dalton spent years in exile in various countries in South and Central America, as well as Eastern Europe. In 1975, a military faction of the Ejército Revolucionario del Pueblo (ERP) accused him of trying to divide their organization and condemned him to death.
