I have always found his poems difficult to work on – beyond a superficial level – though, as what follows suggests, I hope I have made some headway with it over the years. What drove him was the fire in his head. Somebody – a participant, one of the old women? I will post on the even more astonishing poem, ‘Romancero sonambulo’, next week. . Its meaning is a mystery and I suspect one Lorca would not venture to explain himself.

. La tarde, así, parece funcionar como un elemento de la naturaleza que, como en el poema anterior, empatiza y acompaña el sentimiento de los gitanos: se desmaya sobre los jinetes heridos, cubre sus cuerpos muertos.

Como en varios poemas del romancero, algunos símbolos que se presentan al comienzo, justo antes de que se desate la acción, vuelven a aparecer al final, para reforzar su valor como indicios.

Y, en efecto, de inmediato se figura el cuerpo muerto de un gitano llamado Juan Antonio el de Montilla, que cae rodando barranca abajo rodeado de flores. Para introducir la imagen del cadáver de Juan Antonio el de Montilla vemos "Ángeles con grandes alas / de navajas de Albacete" (226), y en los versos finales del romance, "ángeles negros volaban / por el aire del poniente.
