He was well-known as a ‘bon vivant’ (“one who lives well”). Remnants of bread, cheese, and fruit, and empty wine bottles show that lunch is over. Despite this challenge, he continued to work tirelessly, adapting his technique to accommodate his physical limitations. These paintings also demonstrate Renoir's interest in depicting modern life and leisure activities, a theme that would remain central to his work throughout his career.

In 1874, Renoir participated in the first Impressionist exhibition, alongside Monet, Sisley, Bazille, and other like-minded artists.

He wears a singlet, a new fashion statement invented by an Australian athlete who tore the sleeves off his T-shirt because they were too binding. At the upper right, the artist Paul Lhote and the bureaucrat Eugène Pierre Lestringuez seem to be flirting with actress Jeanne Samary.

In the foreground, Renoir included a youthful portrait of his fellow artist, close friend, and wealthy patron, Gustave Caillebotte, who sits backwards in his chair and is grouped with the actress Angèle and the Italian journalist Maggiolo.

Caillebotte, an avid boatman and sailor, wears a white boater's shirt and flat-topped boater.

Renoir made the water shimmer in the sunlight with his swift touches of orange and pink. Her gentlemen friends are dressed in white jackets, T-shirts, and trousers. He left behind a vast and influential body of work, comprising over 6,000 paintings, as well as numerous sculptures, drawings, and prints. The main focus of light is coming from the large opening in the balcony, beside the large singleted man in the hat.

Pierre-Auguste Renoir was a pioneering artist whose work helped to define the Impressionist movement and shape the course of modern art.

A railroad bridge is barely noticeable under the stripes of the awning. Renoir moved away from Impressionism between 1878 and 1881. Renoir sold the painting to Paul Durant-Ruel, a very influential art dealer and gallery owner. A rowboat, sailboat, and barge are on the river.

Later Years and Legacy (1900s-1919)

In the early 1900s, Renoir began to suffer from rheumatoid arthritis, a painful condition that made it increasingly difficult for him to paint.

The painting depicts a group of nude female figures bathing in a lush, idyllic landscape. Several houses of Chatou are visible.

The painting is composed mainly of the complementary colors, orange and blue. He is dressed in the summer fashion of blue trousers, white jacket, and straw hat. At the bottom left of the composition, a woman holding a dog (monkey pincher), is seamstress Aline Charigot, whom later became Renoir’s wife.
